If I get my hands on it, I’ll keep it in a bit less humid soil during the winter, I’ve kept mine in water and it sadly turned to mush before the spring arrived. It refused to overwinter inside and froze to death outside. Sadly I also lost my Cyperus papyrus last winter. I remember when I tried propagating my old Cyperus plants, that started to rot first and then if I was lucky enough, small shoots also poked out. After only 6 days, first shoots already started emerging. I placed all of them into large jar filled with water and waited. Hopefully they will be easier to maintain during the winter around here as well. Large heads of pendulous leaves greenish flower spikelets can measure 1 across. It looks like the Giant but only gets about 36- 40 tall. United States gardeners in all regions can grow Prince Tut as a long season annual, giving a show from spring until fall with its frilly heads and interesting. It is such a nice combination of the giant papyrus and dwarf papyrus. Graceful Grasses Prince Tut is a dwarf Egyptian Papyrus, much more suited to homeowners patios and decks, or perhaps in a bog or water garden in the hottest portions of the growing zones. With shorter stems than King Tut, Prince Tut is quite sturdy and less likely to have stems flop. This Papyrus has quickly become one of our our favorite pond plants. Fun and interesting, without being so overwhelmingly huge. In colder zones, papyrus is sometimes grown as a potted plant sitting in standing water it is brought indoors to a sunroom or. Received friendly chit-chat and at least ten large Cyperus heads! I was told that these plants return every year even when temperatures in the winter fall slighly below freezing. A nicely compact form of Egyptian Papyrus, about half the height of King Tut, but with the same large poms on the ends of the stems. Papyrus is a plant indigenous to northern Africa, thus, it will survive as a hardy perennial in North America only in USDA hardiness zones 8 and warmer zone 8 might require winter mulching to protect the plants. If you want that exotic look but have a small growing space, there are a couple of smaller choices. And the dramatic appearance makes for a great conversation with the connection to the distant past. It only took 6 days for the cutting to start growing new shoots. The other day, a couple of weeks ago, I found large Cyperus alternifolius plants and asked the owner if I can take one that was broken. King Tut is a member of the same papyrus family of plants that the Egyptians used to make paper. The past two summers, I've planted it in a container on the patio, along with some lower growing moisture loving plants to fill in the composition, and it's turned into a grandly showy specimen at least five feet high. I doubt they froze, but none of them survived. On Nov 5, 2016, RobertWM from Clawson, MI wrote: This superb plant has become a favorite in just a short time. Last winter, I tried placing my Cyperus plants into deeper water to protect it from freezing. It’s not hardy enough to survive most of our winters outside, so I need to take it inside during the cold months. It’s a rewarding plant that can easily withstand drought, neglect and constant wet and boggy conditions. I had been growing Cyperus alternifolius some time ago.
